Variety at Work

Boat for Hope
The 27th June 2010 was a memorable and moving day
for Variety Tent 41. It was the day we launched Ireland’s
first National Boat for Hope, and idea presented by Tent 47, Vancouver
BC at a previous convention.
The concept suited us and our Delegates unanimously
felt that this was a project we could take on and Sunday 27th June
was the day.
After months of discussion and planning and with
the co-operation of the Harbourmaster and Commodore of Howth Yacht
Club, who gave us full support, things took shape. Two staunch members
of HYC, Pat and Brian, took responsibility for organizing and providing
the boat owners, crews, life jackets etc., for the day. They had
immediate response, and offers of support just flooded in.
Having invited 100 ‘special needs’
children, accompanied by parents and siblings – 300 in total,
the day dawned warm and sunny, getting us off to a great start.
All were equipped with swords, eye-patches and large water shooters,
and the mini pirates took to the seas, sailing off in colourful
‘pirate boats’ to attack the baddie pirate boat for
treasure.
Each child received a ‘treasure chest’
and returned triumphant, to enjoy a BBQ and a fresh fruit dessert
– kindly sponsored by two friends of Variety. A fun day followed
with Disco music, two local Bands, Local Choir, Clowns, Facepainting,
Outdoor Games, Toy Stall, Ice Cream vouchers and all that goes with
the ‘family day’ for our special guests.
The joy on the glowing faces of the children was
the reward for our efforts. The many letters and thanks from the
families, carers and teachers were the icing on the cake.
Sincere thanks to Senator Feargal Quinn, who officially
opened the event, ably assisted by Dr. Michael Woods T.D., Harbourmaster
Captain Raja Maitra and Commodore Mr. Peter McKenna of HYC.
Thanks also to Howth Chamber of Commerce,
the Boat Owners, Howth Coast Guard, Fire Brigade, Howth Police,
Knights of Malta, The Scout Movement, the Business People of Howth
and Sutton and the Sponsors who helped in so many ways to make the
day such a memorable one. We cannot forget our own Crew and Committee
who worked tirelessly, assisted by many volunteers and friends of
Variety. We thank you one and all, because “not every child’s
life is smooth sailing”
